Connecting Samsara to FleetPredict in 10 Minutes
If your fleet uses Samsara, you can have FleetPredict’s predictive maintenance AI monitoring your vehicles within a single work session. This guide walks through the complete integration — from generating your API token to receiving your first predictive alert.
What You’ll Need
- An active Samsara account with Fleet Admin or Org Admin permissions
- Your FleetPredict account (sign up at fleetpredict.ca if you don’t have one)
- Approximately 10 minutes
Step 1: Generate a Samsara API Token
FleetPredict connects to Samsara via their REST API. You’ll need to generate a read-only API token that gives FleetPredict access to vehicle telematics data.
- Log into your Samsara Dashboard
- Navigate to Settings → API Tokens
- Click Create New Token
- Give it a descriptive name:
FleetPredict Integration - Set the token scope to Read Only — FleetPredict only ever reads data from Samsara, it never writes back
- Click Create Token and copy the generated token
Keep this token secure. Treat it like a password. If you ever suspect it’s been compromised, revoke it from the Samsara dashboard and generate a new one.
Step 2: Connect in FleetPredict
- Log into your FleetPredict dashboard at app.fleetpredict.ca
- Navigate to Integrations in the left sidebar
- Click Add Integration → Samsara
- Paste your Samsara API token into the field
- Click Verify Connection
FleetPredict will verify the token by making a test API call to Samsara. You’ll see a green confirmation once the connection is established, along with a summary of how many vehicles were detected.
Step 3: Configure Your Fleet Sync
Once connected, FleetPredict will display all vehicles found in your Samsara account. By default, all vehicles are included in monitoring. You can:
- Exclude specific vehicles (e.g., rental units you don’t want to track)
- Set vehicle groups to match your Samsara fleet groups
- Configure alert routing: choose which maintenance coordinators receive alerts for which vehicle groups
Click Save Configuration when done.
Step 4: Historical Data Backfill
FleetPredict automatically requests up to 90 days of historical telematics data from Samsara’s API to seed our prediction models. This backfill happens in the background and typically completes within 30–60 minutes depending on your fleet size.
You can monitor the backfill progress from the Integrations page. While the backfill is running, you’ll see a progress indicator. Our AI models begin generating predictions as soon as enough historical data is available — typically within 2–4 hours of connecting.
Step 5: Your First Predictive Alerts
Once the historical data backfill completes, FleetPredict’s models analyze your fleet’s telematics patterns and begin surfacing alerts. Within 48 hours of connecting, you’ll typically see:
- Active alerts: vehicles that currently show signs of impending failure
- Watch list: vehicles with degrading health metrics that don’t yet warrant immediate action
- Health scores: a 0–100 score for each vehicle based on current diagnostic signals
Alerts are delivered via the FleetPredict dashboard, email, and optionally via webhook if you want to pipe them into Slack, PagerDuty, or your maintenance management system.
Common Issues
“No vehicles detected” after connecting
This usually means the API token was generated for a different organization (Samsara supports multiple orgs). Double-check you’re generating the token from the correct organization.
Vehicles showing “Insufficient data”
Some older Samsara-connected vehicles transmit fewer data points, particularly vehicles with older gateways or minimal sensor packages. FleetPredict will still monitor these vehicles but may show lower prediction confidence scores.
Data sync delays
Samsara’s API has rate limits. For large fleets (150+ vehicles), the initial sync may take longer than typical. This is normal and doesn’t indicate a problem with the integration.
What’s Next
Now that Samsara is connected, explore:
- Brake failure prediction — how our models work (using GeoTab as an example, but the same logic applies to Samsara data)
- Setting up maintenance workflows — auto-generating work orders from FleetPredict alerts
- Configuring alert thresholds — tuning sensitivity to match your fleet’s risk tolerance
